rising above violence, together.

For 36 years, Womankind, formerly the New York Asian Women's Center, has worked with survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual violence of all ages to rise above trauma and build a path to healing. We bring critical resources and deep cultural competency to help Asian communities find refuge, recovery, and renewal.

Womankind grew from a single helpline in 1982 to six sites across New York City today. In addition to our headquartersin Lower Manhattan, we have 2 confidential shelters for survivors of domestic violence, and 3 community offices in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Here, anyone and everyone who is in need of support in overcoming violence can walk in to learn more about services or to receive immediate assistance.

Our team of dedicated advocates provides life-changing services in English, 18+ Asian languages, and Spanish, including a 24-hour multilingual helpline, emergency housing, counseling, wellness activities, art therapy, legal services, economic empowerment and so much more.

Womankind is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Our Mission

We started out very small, but our dreams were anything but. The founders envisioned helping women rise above violence and move beyond trauma. And we have been working to make those dreams a reality. Collectively, Womankind strives towards reducing inequality and inequity in our society—the underpinnings of violence. But, there is still a ways to go.

When I first came to Womankind, I did not understand what had happened to me. The abuse started so gradually, I did not realize how bad it had become. I never thought it could happen to me, and since we weren’t married I did not know if it would be considered domestic violence. Talking to my counselor about the violence helped me see it for what it was.
