Collage, 2015

18” x 24”

This is one of a collection of collage works I created while living in Paris for a year. The city was very isolating and sometimes hostile in the depths of winter. I did not speak fluent french, just guidebook french which added to the feeling of isolation. The process of creating the work gave me a greater sense of resilience to my immediate surroundings.

Catherine Chesters is a painter and designer splitting time between the west Catskills of New York and Brooklyn.

Born in County Durham, England. She received a BH Honors from the London College of Communication, Higher National Diploma in Design Communications from Suffolk College and OND in Graphic Design at Durham New College.

Growing up in the North East of England in the 70’s & 80’s she witnessed a dynamic and schizophrenic contrast. A culture that was struggling economically, violent and aggressive; all set against an overwhelmingly beautiful and natural backdrop. Catherine combines her astute observations of nature and human psyche and folds them into abstractions in order to turn the mundane and discomfort of existence into escapist imagery. She creates things of beauty and irony from mixed media, natural elements, and screen printing techniques. Her work generates a surreal visual that maintains a naive optimism, while contrasting the influence of rural landscapes with decades of city living.
